My former shipmates with their wives were very nice and cordial and a lot of hugging, backslapping and embrace with the ladies. We have the last 3 sailors left that was onboard during WWII and given lots of admiration from us younger ones. We all stayed in one hotel that makes it so great and enjoyable. We had ballroom dancing too. It should not be dissimilar to "toktok" or "pekpek" as the object being hit (the bisocol) is stationary while being hit with an outside force. It would be different if for instance I will hold the bisocol face forward with my left hand, swing it and then would hit my stationary right hand. The bisocol shell itself will stop it's forward motion being blocked by my right hand but the contents itself will still be going forward unless blocked by another force. It is now a part of the campus of the local high school. Pasok was once a forest. I have no idea how it came to be known as Pasok, literally meaning, "go in" in Tagalog although Pasok is not in Tagalog country.##### It was not really a forest as forests go. But to me it was. It was thick with buri palms with some light underbrush. It was private property about half a block in size. I never knew who owned it. I just remember that whoever owned it did not prohibit any one from grazing a carabao or a horse or any other farm work animal on it.##### The buri palms had ample space in between as to allow enough sunlight for grass to grow on the forest floor. The wild grass was fine for grazing and I often left my milking goat there on a leash and it grazed all day with her kids until I herded them home in the afternoon.##### I don't think the palms were planted and managed as an orchard because I remember them being there without any tender loving care. They grew haphazardly, randomly scattered throughout the property in various stages of maturity. Mature palms grew taller than the typical bamboo houses at the time. A younger palm, still too young to have visible trunks at about three feet tall, was my favorite source of material to tie things up because, unlike coconut fronds that are brittle and easily broken, buri palm leaves are naturally strong with sinewy fibers.##### There had been times when I didn't have a leather belt like those worn by the more affluent kids in school. Well, I always had buri palm leaves to tighten the waist of my short pants and I often went to school with a new belt of green buri palm frond.##### Housewives in the old days also split the hard midribs of buri palm fronds into very thin strips, bleached them under the sun, and wove them into hats. Those hats were called Calasiao hats probably because Calasiao town produced the most number of hats then as a cottage industry. In those times middlemen bought the hats and sold them to exporters in Manila who then shipped them to millinery shops in the United States. But I heard that poor demand killed the industry due to competition from the famous Panama hats.##### Aside from grazing my goat or my grandfather's carabao there is another memory I have of Pasok - a literally sweet memory. A very mature buri palm can produce a sugar-sweet juice called "sinamit" (sweetened) when its top is cut off, after which the palm dies. I used to enjoy the aroma of the juice that farm hands collected in earthen jars. Sometimes a farm hand - of course I knew all the farm hands - would let me have a gulp from a coconut shell. But the sweeter aroma was while the farm hands gently boiled the juice until it turned into a thick brown liquid almost into a paste. They then poured the semi-solid brown stuff into tiny baskets made of palm fronds to cool and solidify to be ready for the market as "pakasiat na silag - meaning, candied brown sugar from buri palms.##### I was in my third year in high school when authorities acquired Pasok to become the southern portion of the high school campus. It was still a "forest" then. Work crews had not yet begun cutting down the palms, and one can study in seclusion on a vacant class hour during a school day. One day, between classes, I decided to go to Pasok, still a forest, so I could read some assigned lessons for a quiz on the next hour. I stumbled into a scene that both surprised and aroused me. I was still in short pants and I was still too timid to show interest in girls but the surprising scene awakened my consciousness of girls. I saw a boy and a girl kissing on the grass!##### The boy, a lot bigger than me, threatened that if I told anybody what I saw he would give me two black eyes. Shaking with fear I promised silence. But the erotic scene of real live kissing (as opposed to inanimate kissing scenes in Hollywood movies) startled me into a realization that I, too, should find a girlfriend. These guerillas sported new US army uniforms, carbines, helmets, canteens, combat boots – the works. Their leader sported shiny eagles of a full colonel on his new khakis. For want of a name I will just call them L Guerillas. L stands for Liberation because I became aware of these guerillas only when they emerged as soon as General Macarthur landed on the shores of Lingayen Gulf.***** Obviously these L Guerillas were able to convince US 43rd Division officers that they can be useful in the campaign to liberate Luzon. Maybe that’s why, after Leyte and Mindoro, General Macarthur chose our hometown, located south inland from Lingayen Gulf, as his first land command post in Luzon where, according to some postwar reports, he stayed for ten days at a schoolhouse.***** So unknown to us at the time our little town had a brush with history. The Great “I Shall Return” General Macarthur slept in our town! But the reports did not indicate which schoolhouse the general stayed at. The town square in front of the school bristled with heavy anti-aircraft guns. ***** But perhaps Macarthur may have stayed at another schoolhouse about a mile southeast of town because heavy anti-aircraft guns likewise bristled at that school’s front yard. They did not suffer a single casualty apparently because they were never at the front line. It was the bus driver-colonel’s more experienced N Guerillas that did the fighting.***** The U.S. 43rd Division supplied the N Guerillas with better arms and some training but it appeared that the 43rd did not fully trust guerilla combat competence. Without expecting significant results the 43rd used the guerillas originally as a feint from the north in the assault on a Manila water source called Ipo Dam. Like the Americans the Japanese dismissed any threat from the guerillas, aware that the Americans coming from the south were their real problem. The Japanese thus paid more attention to their southern defenses.***** To the chagrin of Hirohito’s faithful, however, the guerillas successfully broke through the weak northern Japanese defenses to become serious contenders to reach Ipo Dam first before the Americans from the south. In fairness the Americans had to contend with a stronger Japanese defense that gave the Filipinos an advantage in the unofficial race to reach Ipo Dam.***** The American 43rd Division eventually took the bus driver colonel seriously, and for the first time it provided him with ample artillery support. When the American regiment assigned to attack from the south reached Ipo Dam they found, to their dismay, the Filipino guerillas from the north already raising the American flag over the dam.***** Thus Ipo Dam fell by the middle of May, 1945. ***** Even if the war was not yet over that was probably about the time the L Guerillas were mustered out and came home to our hometown, half a year after the Lingayen landings. Obviously no enemy sniper was around since he came home alive to tell the story. Also, the fighting was some safe distance away. He then recited a nursery rhyme he learned in grade school that began, “Hickory dee korydock…”***** On another occasion an L Guerilla patrol came upon a Japanese shivering from malaria. The patrol set fire on the cogon grass around him and left the poor fellow screaming. That was not a funny story but the L Guerillas laughed it off because Japanese atrocities were still fresh in their minds.***** Then, tired and sweating in the hot and humid afternoon, they came upon a brook flowing with fresh sparkling water. Lacking disciplinary training they threw caution to the winds. They put aside their rifles and happily splashed in the cool, clear water, drinking to their hearts’ delight. Then they discovered a gruesome sight upstream. The slow current of the brook carried towards them some floating bodies of dead Japanese soldiers! When the group’s comic blurted, “No wonder the water tasted sweet!” his buddies chased him all the way back to camp. ***** In Norzagaray one guy tried to flirt with a pretty girl. He wore fresh khakis with second lieutenant bars on his collar. Part of his attempted seduction was his audacious claim that he was a Mexican with the American 43rd Division. When the girl started to speak to him in fluent Spanish, our hero made a hasty excuse in Filipino-accented English to go back to his outfit. The girl was probably a Manila society girl whose family fled the city when the war of liberation began.***** After the war the L Guerillas went different ways in their lives. Having been recognized as genuine guerillas, thanks to their having been handed over to the N Guerillas, they received honorable discharges and whatever benefits went with recognition, in particular, educational benefits. Unfortunately they generally failed to take advantage of that benefit. I know only one who did.***** One resumed his annual summer stint as an extra help waiter at Teachers Camp in the resort city of Baguio. Another became a town cop, then chief of police, and eventually municipal secretary. He was the one who tried to be a Mexican. Another went back to high school as the oldest student in his class and became the corps commander of the school’s preparatory military training cadets by virtue of his age and experience as a soldier. I don’t know if he went to college after high school. I know that he later became a town clerk or something.***** Still another, as I mentioned earlier, became a real soldier by enlisting in the postwar Philippine Scouts resurrected by the US Army to replace the famed Philippine Scouts who served in Bataan. After the US Army gave them basic training and equipment the new Scouts found themselves aboard US Navy transports bound for Okinawa.***** The atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki saved the new Philippine Scouts from becoming a part of the invasion army that was supposed hit mainland Japan from Okinawa. A determined Japanese mainland defense would have, supposedly, inflicted horrible casualties on both the regular American forces and the Philippine Scouts.***** Because the atomic bomb shortened the war these postwar Philippine Scouts, aside from cheating possible battle death, missed the chance to show off their soldiering skills for which their predecessors, the prewar Philippine Scouts, gained respect in the jungles of Bataan three years earlier. The new Scouts missed the chance to become another heroic minority outfit like the all-Nisei U.S. 442nd Regiment that served in Europe.***** If I were older in 1945 – I was only 12 at the time – I might have joined the L Guerillas.
